THE THIN GREY LINE
The Home As A Psychological Space Of Self-Sabotage And Hopelessness
Adam Fan
This thesis focuses on the construction of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and attempts to hypothesize on the psychological ramifications these settlements have on Palestinians that live beneath them. My research highlighted how illegal settlements are an extension of Israel’s weaponization of architecture, as a political and military apparatus; from forcible land acquisition and violent evictions of homes, to the propagation of an Israeli lifestyle that taunts and dehumanizes the towns they tower over.
Ultimately, the final project offers a critical speculation on the collective consciousness of a group of people that are oppressed by a system of violence, injustice, and hopelessness—can the idea of a “home” still be conceived as a warm and safe space, or is it a fragile container with no guarantee of tomorrow?
